Atlantic Hope Place of Safety for abandoned and vulnerable babies
Entries Available: 10
Category: Kids, Social Services
Approximately 7 babies are abandoned a day in South Africa.
Atlantic Hope was started by Marilyn May. She is a registered nurse and an advanced doula and has always had a passion for working with babies. She literally opened the doors of her own home – her dining room is now the nursery and the lounge is the ‘play area’. This was in 2010 and since opening, Atlantic Hope has cared for 53 babies.
Atlantic Hope provides basic developmental, physical and mental care. Medical needs are prioritised, and they provide nutrition, shelter, health care services and give these babies the maximum nurturing and care that they need as they begin their lives in the absence of their parents. Atlantic Hope is legally approved to house up to six babies at one time. They provide the much needed care whilst legal decisions and proceedings determining the child’s future are conducted by the social workers, in the most loving and peaceful safe haven.
