For the past 41 years Cheshire Home Summerstrand has been offering care, support and opportunity to profoundly physically disabled persons. For a variety of reasons – motor vehicle and motor bike accidents, diving accidents, assault, strokes, birth disability, disease and rugby injuries, these residents at the Home require assistance and support in the daily lives and to reach their ambitions. 90% of the 54 residents at the home rely on a wheelchair for their mobility. We are able to offer medicinal needs, hygeine needs, games and entertainment, and with the help of the community, we also get involved in community projects and outreaches. Some of our residents are employed at local businesses and our University, and some employed within the Home. We are proud of our Home, but as most other NPO’s need to constantly find innovative ways to source funds for the sustainability of our Home.
In addition, 0ur Home has an outreach programme, Khaya Cheshire, in Walmer Township. This is a “Care and Development Centre” for physically/mentally disabled children whom we strive to teach and get back into the mainstream of education.
