Since its establishment, the project has employed 22 teacher assistants who receive a monthly stipend, whilst pursuing their own studies, which are funded via bursaries offered by the IPPs. There is one employment condition articulated to teacher assistants when they are employed: “Consider your work place as a study opportunity and not a job”. Everyone who is employed by the Douglas Maths and Science Project must study towards a specific qualification. The teacher assistants are studying in a variety of fields including Education, Engineering, Information Technology, Administration, and Business. The team all study together and support each other in achieving their dreams so that when the time comes for them to embark on their various careers; they do so debt-free, having no study loans to pay for.
The teacher assistants bring a “COOL FACTOR”to Maths & Science, since they make their lessons vibrant and fun. A team of five or six teacher assistants plus one qualified teacher visit each classroom once a week and perform 30 minute activities with pupils. The small groups ensure the participation of all pupils in a way that is not possible with regular teachers. The project covers all ten local schools located in Douglas and assists about 4 800 pupils.
